The Intelligent Mail Package Barcode (IMpb) is the Postal Service's next generation tracking barcode for parcels and Extra Services. IMpb-compliant barcodes provide destination routing and piece-level data that enable the Post Office to increase system-wide processing efficiency, enhance tracking capabilities, and provide tracking services that compete more effectively in the package and expedited delivery marketplace.
What is the IMpb?
The Intelligent Mail® package barcode is the Postal Service's next generation tracking barcode for parcels and Extra Services. A package with an IMpb allows the USPS® to provide end users with detailed tracking information. The barcode offers full visibility to package tracking on the delivery status of the parcel as it routes to its destination.

Extra services are enhancements that, for a fee in addition to postage, provide greater security and accountability for mail, convenience to the sender, or improved handling. Not all extra services are available for all classes of mail and only certain services may be combined for the same mailpiece. The current eDelivery Confirmation, eSignature Confirmation, and Certified labels will continue to be accepted by the USPS. Each of these labels will be modified in the future to include an IMpb barcode. The coloring, look & feel will also change with the new labels.
